"I recall my first notebook, a traditional black and white composition book with 70 wide-lined sheets. I filled its pages with raps that delved into my deepest and most private emotions. However, around the age of 16, I lost the desire to write due to a series of unfortunate events. Nearly a decade passed before I picked up the pen to write again, only to find myself facing writer's block frequently.
I have always known that writing is my calling because I am highly opinionated, and speaking has been a challenge for most of my life. I was made fun of for the way I sounded and the way I pronounced some words. My family’s background stems from the swamps of Louisiana and my voice early on carried the linguistic characteristics and tonality of my ancestors.. Writing has always been my way of expressing myself, providing the confidence that speaking often lacks. While I cannot pinpoint the exact moment when my passion for writing reignited, it was a gradual process over several years and numerous writing projects that compelled me to confront my insecurities. Instead of celebrating a specific day that brought me back to writing, I choose to celebrate the journey itself and the growth it has brought me."- Alma Allums
